SUGGESTIONS FOR STIMULATING LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
1. Use facial expressions and lots of melody in your voice.
2. Show your child objects as you name them.
3. Talk about clothes as s/he is getting dressed, body parts as s/he gets a bath, and food and utensils as s/he eats.
4. Use books to show pictures.
5. Use single action and function words as s/he is performing an action such as “run” or “jump”.
6. Pick your child up slowly and say “up”. Put him down slowly and say “down”.
7. Use toys and words associated with them. For example, say a train goes “choo-choo” and a car goes “brummm” or “beep-beep”.
8. Ask, “Who’s that?” while looking in the mirror. “That’s (name)!” this is a good time to name body parts. Touch nose and say, “I see (name’s) nose!”
9. Say “uh-oh” or “oh-no!” when something goes wrong.
10. Talk about where things are and answer questions with spatial words “in”and “on”.
